About Pyredoodle Puppies and Parents

The parent dogs are available for you to visit.  They are very different in their temperaments and make for a very desirable hybrid puppy.

Cloud

Our stud is a 6 year old Standard Poodle named Cloud.  He is a large and athletic white Standard Poodle weighing 87 pounds.  Below is a picture of him at 10 months, right before his first real haircut.

cloud1

Below is a current picture of Cloud in December of 2015.

DSCN0588

Cloud is athletic and playful, yet has a sensitive temperament which makes him very willing to please.  He likes to cuddle.  Cloud rarely barks and would never be destructive or messy.  Since some poodles can be dangerous, it’s important to make it clear that this lover doesn’t have a hurtful bone in his body.

The Females

We have three Great Pyrenees mothers.  Both are very typical of the two “branches” of the breed:  Eastern (French) and Western (Andorran).  see WikiPedia by clicking here.

Gigi

A former service dog, Gigi is a very bright and obedient female of the Andorran line.  Her pups have always been white or ivory with either wavy or straight hair – and no shedding.

Angel

A white Andorran with a touch of color on her ears, Angel has pups that are white, brindle, and black with white paws.  She is the SWEETEST and most chilled our Pyre of all time.  The most devoted mother, her pups get tons of milk and don’t seem to be hungry for real food until week 4.  She will also nurse another dog’s pups if need be – all our girls are very good friends!  (Sorry, but I do not know how to add her picture here!)

DandyLion

A 1 year old Pyrenees that’s a cross of the French line and the Andorran line, Dandy is a large member of our family that’s very bright and good-natured.  We got her as a puppy in Spring of 2019.  Being from both lines of the Pyrenees breed, she has a lot of color from the French line and gets her more athletic build, lack of drooling, and more refined head shape from the Andorran line.

RETIRED MAMA DOGS

Song

Song is typical of the French type, having a shorter muzzle and a rounder head.  She is stoic and kind.

DSCN0559

Song with her Maltese playmate

Like all Pyrenees, she loves small animals and children, seen above tussling with her Maltese admirer.  She has “Badger” markings and her pups tend to share her increased coloration.  Song was raised to be a show dog and is accustomed to being pampered.  She weighs 102 pounds.

Below is Song in September of 2013Song in Summer of 2013

Petunia

Petunia, being of the Andorran line, is snow white with a more streamlined head and a very silky coat.  She is HUGE for a female Pyre, weighing 110 pounds.

DSCN0571

Petunia was no “show puppy”.  She was raised outdoors as a livestock protection dog in the dangerous hills of Montana.  She has dealt with coyotes, wolves, and cougars.  While she lives in our home now, it took several months to get her domesticated.  While both of our females are naturally protective of small animals, Petunia would hunt coyotes all night long if we let her.  She is a terrific home protector, yet has excellent judgment.  None of our dogs have ever harmed a human being, but Petunia is no “shrinking violet” when a stranger enters our property.

The Hybrid:  crossing Great Pyrenees with Standard Poodle

Since the PyreDoodle hybrid is a cross between two distinct breeds, the adult dog will usually demonstrate a beneficial phenomenon called “hybrid growth vigor“.  This means that you can expect a mature dog which is larger than the average of the parents AND avoid some of the genetic pitfalls that can come with pure-breeds.

On the pure Pyrenees side, hip dysplasia,  hypersalivation and shedding are key concerns with any giant breed – crossing with a St. Poodle makes these concerns almost nonexistent.

Also, since Poodles were bred in Germany to be avid bird dogs, their legendary hyperactivity is beyond dispute.  Our nickname for Cloud is “Mr. Wiggles”.  But this extra energy is greatly reduced when crossed with the stoic Pyre.  And since Poodles do not shed at all and are one of the most hypoallergenic breed, our PyreDoodle owners tell us that their dogs do not shed (once they lose their “puppy coat”) and never make them sneeze.

With PyreDoodles, the dog will enjoy a longer life than most large breeds.  Since your large dog can be expected to live into his or her teens, training your pet to have good “citizenship” and obedience will be time well-spent.

Because poodles tend to have allergic reactions to grain as well as a susceptibility to cancer (30% mortality), we highly recommend a meat-based diet such as “Taste of the Wild” in venison/bison or salmon.  Again, these breed-specific health concerns have been significantly mitigated through the cross-breeding of two highly dissimilar breeds: Pyrenees and Standard Poodle.

The hybrid of Pyrenees and Standard Poodle also results in a dog which is very low-shedding and hypoallergenic.  Both of these traits come from the Poodle breed, as well as an athletic physicality which makes for a good jogging partner.  The Pyrenees component provides a more robust physicality and an easy-going/stoic quality which calms the hyper-activity of the Poodle breed, making the PyreDoodle a large dog which is an excellent choice for a family.

You, the owner, can promote the natural inclination of the Pyrenees to be a dog intent on protecting the home.  That inclination toward “toughness” is evident almost from birth.  Of the nine hybrid puppies born in August of 2013, only one (female Cleopatra) had that rugged disposition – she was directed to a family that lives “off the grid” in an area which is literally infested with wolves, cougars, coyotes, and Grizzly Bears outside of Lincoln, MT.  However, most pups demonstrate obvious sensitivity from an early age which is usually desirable to a family environment.  We do everything we can from birth to help each pup develop into gentle and affectionate family members through frequent handling and hand-feeding twice daily.

      Hi Lisa,

Yes, since they are so young, they are still available. Mama (Hannah) weighs 90 pounds. Dad (Starbux) weighs 58.

We are asking for a $200 deposit and $300 at time of purchase. We are in Helena, MT and can look into shipping costs. The price includes four de-wormings, first set of shots, and first vet exam by our vet.

How friendly is the mom? I’m looking for a very friendly and eventually mellow dog. The mom sounds like she may be a great protector but is she also friendly?

Song (the Mom) is a very level-headed and stoic female. She is in the house 22 hours per day and just hangs out keeping an eye on things. She has never been aggressive toward anything or anyone although she has not had much reason. When she runs around the neighborhood, she is always friendly with other animals and our neighbors. She loves to visit and everyone thinks that she and Starbucks are awesome.

I was wondering whether these mixes have a tendency to roam, as I know great pyrenees do. If they do roam, how should I contain them in my yard? Also, would these pups be shipped as luggage, or would they be brought into the cabin? Lastly, if they are flown as luggage, how would I be sure that it stays pressurized, because if it didn’t the dog would die?

    Thanks

I recently found the Pyredoodle breed when my husband and I couldn’t agree on a type of dog to get (I wanted a Pyrenees and he wanted a goldendoodle) I see that you are planning a litter for the winter and was wondering if that is a litter of Songs, or if her’s was the one you had this summer?

The reason I’m asking is I’ve seen a few other puppies from Pyrenees moms with her markings and the babies got the markings as well and I would love a a puppy with the mask on the face (wouldn’t need to be perfect, adds character!) If not no biggie I love the solid white too 🙂

My other question is how big of a yard/house would you need for a Pyredoodle to be happy and comfortable? We live in the suburbs and have a good sized yard, but by no means is it country sized.

And how long is the wait list compared to the average litter size?

Oh and are these dogs good with cats? I have cats. Thanks!

My name is Joy Taylor (I am in thebprocess of getting duvorced so my name will soon be Spencer). I am interested in possibly purchasing a pyredoodle female pup! I am doing this for severall reasons….first, I have always wanted a great white pyrenees but would like one that sheds way less! Second, my husband will be taking our big dog when he mobes out which is fine because technically she is his dog. Third, I am needing not only a pet but a good watch dog as I do not trust my soon to be ex! Please let me know all info on your pups, pricing, where you are located, pics of your pups, the parents and your facility.

      Hi, Nicole:

Last year was good and bad. The good part is that Song did have a litter late in 2016, but lost a litter midway through gestation earlier in the year. Took the fun out of things – in more than one way. The vet said, “These things happen”, but could offer no explanation as to why.

As a result, we got a young adult female named Gigi. She’s smaller and will likely have pups that grow to about 80 pounds. She is preggers now and due April 10th. Dad is Cloud, our Standard Poodle. This is her first litter.

      Thanks for your interest!

      Hi, Amy:

Shedding is a big issue with our Pyres, but their pups shed very little because the Poodle side of the equation is a dominant trait.

We have a young female that’s preggers now with her first litter. She’s due April 10th, 2017. Gigi is smaller – as many people do not want a 100 pound adult dog. Her pups will likely get to 80 pounds or so.

Our older female, Song (age 6), lost a litter midway through gestation last year, but then had a litter in the fall. We were concerned that she had lost her fertility and found another mama dog. It could have just been a fluke thing – not sure what happened. Vet said, “It happens.”

      Thanks for your interest.

Do you have pictures of our girls parents and her birthday. We will roll with the fact that she presents to be a 10 week old. Her heritage is 50/50? I have spoken to so many people back in May that I was surprised to see that she appears to have a pure. Pure Mom and pure standard poodle Dad…is that correct?

Abrielle says that when she gets her companion her name is to be Olivia. She is not expecting her until Sept so this is an epic surprise that is much needed during the Covid shut in. Our kids won’t be joining the gen pop until mid 2021. My eldest is immunocompromised secondary to her autoimmune condition. We do not endorse her traveling by plane at this time. Our little one has been so lonely that she has been befriending garden slugs then mourning them when they die. Jann, you were a God-send because I was trying to get my husband to agree to a hamster. He emphatically disagreed in the pet stores don’t even have any right now.
