3 boys left – Getting big!

Gigi has 3 boys left. 1 is white and 2 are ivory. We took pics – in 20 mph wind – which frightened them a bit. This was their first time outside so they were a little jittery. (As babies, they are susceptible to parvo, etc., so we keep them inside.)

They have had a third vaccination now of “5-way” immunization and have been dewormed every 2 weeks. (The vax dates were 12/18/22, 1/15/23, and 2/16/23.)

Born 11/1/22, they are big – and need their families!

We started breeding PyreDoodles in 2009 and this is the first time we’ve been in this position – having difficulty finding loving homes for our puppies. COVID did it! Millions of folks knew they’d be working from home so they got a little friend to keep them company. Since 2021, the need for family dogs has decreased. Also, with the political change, money is tighter now. These puppies really do need their families, so price is negotiable. Call Jan at 406.465.4890 to discuss these pups and upcoming litters.

Here’s a link to pics of the boys, each one in his own folder with the names we’ve given them for now: Mr.White, Ivory, and TanMan. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12ByFgciE1leAJoTwvLoMSHyiDpgknRuf?usp=sharing

Training up your puppy

We have decided to keep a male puppy for ourselves. He will be 12 weeks old soon, born on the Fourth of July. His name is Alastair Cotton.

Through the years, we have learned how to train a dog to be a significant member of the family. Let me share some YouTube videos that I found helpful. The link is below.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL_9f2R3d2Ecc8KsH2_ZGjIGvil83oZgjw

Mr. Cotton is a confident and a somewhat stubborn puppy. He hated his first bath. He doesn’t like to be on a leash. These are Pyrenees traits. Positive training, frequent grooming, and cuddling are required to create the bonding he needs to become a great dog.

He’s going to be big! So, when my wife takes him into the city, it is crucial that Mr. Cotton be obedient and helpful, rather than disobedient and problematic. I will be sharing videos of his progress along the way.

Angel has 5 pups, available mid Feb., 2022

It’s been wild having two litters in our home AT THE SAME TIME !!! Angel’s puppies will be available around Feb. 21st. She had one that was smaller, but she’s such a devoted mom that that little girl has almost caught up to her siblings. A few are still available so call Jan at 406.465.4890.

Below is one of Angel’s pups, nearly grown.

One of Angel’s pups, nearly grown.

We’ve only had significant trouble with one puppy – a runt who just refused to thrive. We had to cram milk and then food into the little guy. The vet did her part, too. He barely lived. Then one day he just decided that he wanted to live. This is him as an adult in Montana, below.

Gigi has 9 Puppies, available the first week of Feb., 2022

Gigi is our most mature Great Pyrenees mama (I’m not using the “B word”!) Most of her 9 puppies are claimed, but we still have a couple available. They really all do look similar and have sweet temperaments.

Here are pics of her pups from previous litters at different stages of development:

Angel has 7 puppies

Angel has had her second litter and all are doing well. If you want to get a pup, call or text Jan at 406.465.4890.

Angel is all white, but with a bit of grey on her ears that you might overlook at first. Her litter is assorted colors: brindle, black with white paws, and ivory.

Angel is a typical Pyrenees female: she weighs about 100 pounds, is a good home defender against predators (even owls), and laid back. Thankfully, she has a dry mouth and a mellow bark.

She was kind of waddling while pregnant and is so relieved to have delivered.

Gigi has had three litters and her pups have gone all over the nation.  Some grow up to protect livestock as working dogs while others are treated like royalty in homes.  Here are a variety of Gigi’s pups living in different homes from California to Maine.

Song to deliver May 2018

Our Pyre from the French side of the Pyrenees Mountains is starting to “nest” and her milk has come in.  Song is 7 years old now so we  have decided that this will be her last litter. She’s always happy when she’s preggers or hanging out with her babies that it’s kind of sad, but that’s life.

Unlike a pure white Pyrenees, Song’s “badger” markings dictate that her puppies almost always have color. Of course, that’s out of our hands.   Following are some photographs of Song and her puppies at different stages of growth.

Here is a link to our neighbor, Michelle, spoiling her dogs; our pup is still in the awkward stage of being half-grown, but is a very good pup, indeed.

If you want to reserve a puppy, call Jan about making a deposit at 406.465.4890.  Thank you.

De-worming & Vaccinating Pups and Dogs

We only go to the veterinarian’s office when we HAVE to go.  Why?  Because that is where the SICK pets go!  Sick and contagious pets hang out in the waiting room and then your healthy pet can contract an illness while going for a routine exam just by sniffing around the area.  And most dogs get very stressed when going to the vet.  If possible, this is to be avoided.  And it is easy to become proficient at giving booster shots and de-worming.

We have done a lot of research as to the correct way to establish a de-worming program for our pups and dogs.  As a result, our critters are parasite-free and healthy.

DISCLAIMER:  We are not veterinarians and do not hold ourselves out to be veterinarians.  The information here explains the procedures that we use and have found to be effective with our dogs – based on the references below and our communications with veterinarians and other breeders.

We buy our pet care products and medicines from www.AlliVet.com.  They are a fine company with the best prices.

An annual vet exam will fill in any voids in your program and let you know how it’s working out through blood and fecal testing, but you will save yourself a ton of money doing most of it yourself.  (Rabies shots are one immunization that only a vet can do.)

De-Worming

2 drugs are needed for our program at home:  Pyrantel Pamoate for intestinal worms and Ivermectin 1% solution for heartworms.  Both are inexpensive and effective.

Also, we remove feces from the dog’s area daily.

Pyrantel Pamoate — Pyrantel Pamoate suspension is a dewormer for the removal and control of mature infections of strongyles, pinworms and roundworms in dogs, cats and horses.  One brand name is called “Strongid”.  See petMD here.  We administer 1 cc per 10 pounds of dog weight.  Safe for pregnant females.  Administered to pups every 2 weeks, starting at 2 weeks of age through 10 weeks.  Monthly thereafter.

Ivermectin 1% —  This is a sterile solution that is primarily used in cows and swine, but is the active ingredient in “Heartgard®”, an overly-expensive edible product for dogs.  You can use Heartgard® if you prefer; we do not.  Dogs must not be infested with heartworms when using this or they could die.  Have the dog tested prior to administration.  See petMD here.  Side effects do occur in some dogs, so read the petMD file!  We administer just 0.1 cc per 10 pounds of dog weight or 1 cc per 100 pounds.  Considered safe for pregnant females. We administer monthly in warm weather and every other month in Winter.

Vaccinations

Giving dogs their shots is not very difficult, but it takes 2 people: one to hold the dog still and one to give the shot.  My wife holds the dog in the sitting position and turns the dog’s head toward me in a curve.  This makes the skin at the neck slack.  I tug on the loose skin to pull it away from the body of the dog by 1 inch and inject into the loose skin.  This keeps the dog from experiencing greater pain and an injection into the muscle is not necessary.  Distracting the dog with a spoon of peanut butter also helps.  See these videos for demonstrations and more information than is here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zyNzDtBCfI

We vaccinate our pups using Canine Spectra 5 which is commonly called a “5-way”.  Spectra 5 is a convenient, ready-to-use syringe that provides 5-way protection against canine distemper, hepatitis, adenovirus, parvovirus, and parainfluenza. Shipped with ice packs to ensure freshness.  All pups get this shot at 6 weeks of age.  It takes time for them to build up their resistence to illness, so we do not allow pups to go outside at all.  Also, we recommend keeping your pup inside until 10 week of age – just to be safe.  We have coyotes in our area and they’re known to carry parvo, so we do the best we can to reduce the chance of illness.  Vaccinate your pup at weeks 6-8, 10-12, and 12-16.  Then again at 1 year, just to be safe.  (If immunized before 5 weeks, the desired effect will be greatly minimized by the colostrum that is the mother’s milk.)

Spectra 9 is for adult dogs only and also protects against Leptospira.  After the first year of age with the dog being fully immunized, we switch to this for their annual booster at age 2 years and up.  (Some sources express concern about Leptospira vaccinations, so you may go with a “7 way” without Lepto.)

2 litters in fall of 2016

Petunia and Song both had litters in the fall/winter of 2016.  Petunia’s litter went from Maine to Sacramento.  Songs pups going to good homes this week.  Was the first time that we had 2 litters at the same time and was a challenge in our modest home to work it out.

We had pups that are ivory, black and white, and fawn in color.  All healthy this time!  Some of you know that Song lost a litter in 2016 and we are very appreciative of your being patient with us.  (One person was not at all patient, but it worked out.)

Hope to have more pups available around June, 2017.

Song’s pup – growing up

This is a pup from Song’s last litter.  At 4 months, Samson is 52 pounds – on the way to 110 or so.  Here is what his Mom had to say:

“LOVING SAMSON.  He is sO SMART AND SO SWEET AND SO CUTE!  He sits stays comes down, shake, high five roll over, and most important “Drop it!”.  He eats everything like a lawn mower.  🙂  I have even taught him to “heel” so when we walk, he’s right next to me which is so wonderful!  Thank you for him!!”

Puppies in the Oven

Cloud, our Standard Poodle, has been a busy boy.

0411152206

Daddy “Cloud” excited about seeing his little ones.

Song is preggers with an expected adoption time of mid-March.

0421142123

They are very good friends, although she is just too easy-going for him.  It has been up to 80 degrees here in Phoenix, but when it cools off to 45 at night, Song gets more playful.  They are both in their prime and love to loiter beside the kitchen while we cook – expecting to get a little bite.

1225141133

Song is not pushy enough to jump in and get hers; Cloud can’t always see through his fluff, but he has a great nose; Cloud usually gets there first.

Thanks for all your contacts and kind regards!  With the last litter, pups went to Montana, Texas, Los Angeles, and here in Arizona.  It is a joy for us to provide exceptional pups that make uniquely fabulous dogs for your family.  Here’s a half-grown pup with his boy.
